winter water source - plastic fountain on a heat base?

Has anyone used the plastic poultry fountains on a heat base?  I put a small one gallon on last night in SE Michigan and the base was warm and the plastic has not melted.  Do they tell you to only use the metal water fountains for heat transfer and the water won't freeze or will the plastic melt?  I have bought numerous metal units over the years and they keep leaking over time so I may go with plastic.  Any thoughts or experience on using these?  Thanks, moday

No experience here sorry but they sound like a brilliant idea for bad winters

We are trying out a tip we heard recently which is to fill a small water bottle with water and dissolve some salt in it.  Put the sealed bottle inside the drinker.    So far so good :-)
